Previously: When a kind waitress offers hot soup to two homeless children freezing on a snowy sidewalk, she notices a familiar silver locket that reveals a heartbreaking family secret.

A Heartstopping Discovery

As Megan tucked the blanket tighter around Emma's shivering shoulders, her fingers brushed against something cold and metallic beneath the girl's collar. A small silver locket slipped out, dangling under the streetlamp's glow. Megan's breath caught in her throat. The locket was shaped like an old anchor, with a tiny, distinctive scratch across the front. It was a piece of jewelry she knew intimately—it belonged to her older brother, Leo, who had vanished five years ago after a bitter family argument.

"Where... where did you get this?" Megan asked, her voice shaking violently as she touched the cold silver.

Ben immediately grew defensive, pulling his sister closer to his chest.

"It was our dad's," the boy said protectively. "He told us to never take it off. He said it was the only thing left of his family."
"What is your father's name?" Megan whispered, tears streaming down her cold cheeks.
"Leo," Ben replied softly. "But he got very sick last winter. He... he didn't make it. We've been on our own ever since."

Megan collapsed back onto the snow, her mind spinning. These children were her own niece and nephew. Before she could wrap her arms around them, the diner door slammed open with a loud bang. Her manager, Mr. Henderson, stepped out into the cold, his face red with fury.

"Megan! What do you think you're doing?" he shouted. "We don't feed freeloaders here! Get these street rats away from my diner, or you're fired!"

Megan stood up, shielding the children behind her. "They are my family, Mr. Henderson! I won't let you throw them out!" she cried. In a fit of anger, Henderson lunged forward to grab the tray, knocking the hot soup onto the snowy pavement. Just as the confrontation threatened to turn violent, a sleek black car screeched to a halt at the curb.
