Previously: When a cocky young soldier decided to humiliate a quiet, seventy-year-old veteran at a local shooting range, he had no idea he was challenging a legendary ghost unit sniper.

The Arrival of the General

Before Marcus could even find his voice to apologize, the roar of a powerful engine broke the stunned silence of the shooting range. A black military SUV tore through the gates, kicking up a massive cloud of dust as it screeched to a halt right behind the firing line. The door flew open, and a highly decorated general stepped out, his chest covered in medals that glinted in the harsh sunlight. Marcus immediately snapped to attention, his hand trembling as he raised it in a stiff salute. He expected the general to commend him, or at least acknowledge his presence. Instead, the high-ranking officer walked right past him as if he were invisible.

The general stopped directly in front of Charles. For a long moment, the powerful man simply stared at the weathered veteran, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and profound respect. Then, to the absolute horror of Marcus and his friends, the general snapped his heels together and delivered a crisp, formal salute.

"Commander Charles,"
the general said, his voice thick with emotion.
"We have been looking for you for fifteen years. The Pentagon thought we lost you forever."

Marcus felt his stomach drop. The man he had just insulted, the "beggar" he had mocked, was a legendary commander. The general slowly lowered his hand and turned to face Marcus, his expression hardening into pure ice.

"Private,"
the general growled,
"do you have any idea who this man is? Commander Charles led the Ghost Unit. He saved my entire battalion during the midnight siege of ninety-eight, earning the Distinguished Service Cross. You aren't fit to carry his gear."
Marcus stood frozen, terror gripping his heart as the weight of his mistake settled over him. But the general wasn't there just to discipline a cocky private. He opened a secure leather folder and showed Charles a photograph. It was a face Charles never expected to see again—a rogue operative from his past who had betrayed their unit, now active once more.
