<2>An Unforgiving Night at Midnight Harbor<7>The rain beat mercilessly against the glass of the Midnight Harbor Cafe, blurring the neon lights of the city into smears of red and blue. Inside, eighteen-year-old Liam wiped down the laminate counter, the scent of cheap coffee and bleach filling his nose. It was past midnight, and the diner was nearly empty. Liam was exhausted, but he needed this job to support his younger sister.

<7>Suddenly, a shadow fell across the window. Liam looked up and saw a man wearing a worn brown leather jacket collapse against the glass, his face bruised and streaked with rain. He slid down to the wet concrete, clutching his side.

"Don't get involved, Liam. We have customers,"
<7>warned Ted, the diner’s shift manager, who was counting the register with a sour expression.

"Something's wrong with him, Ted. He’s hurt,"
<7>ignore Ted's scowl, Liam grabbed a plastic cup, filled it with water, and darted out into the freezing storm.

<7>KNeeing on the wet concrete, Liam placed a hand on the man's trembling shoulder.

"Sir? Can you hear me?"
<7>The man, whose name was Matthew, groaned softly, blinking through the rain.

"I'm okay,"
<7>he muttered, though his pale face suggested otherwise.

"Take some water,"
<7>helping him sit up. Matthew took a sip, his hands shaking violently.

"Thank you. Thank you,"
<7>matthew whispered, looking at Liam with deep gratitude.

"Stay with me,"
<7>get back inside right now!" Ted yelled over the thunder.

"He needs help, Ted!"
<7>then you're fired."

"You helped me... when nobody else would,"
<7>
"Not my problem,"
<7>
"Yeah. I'm outside Midnight Harbor Cafe,"
<7>he said into the receiver.

I'm outside Midnight Harbor Cafe,"he said into the receiver.
