Fired for Helping a Stranger in the Rain, a Busboy Learns the Shocking Truth
The neon sign of the Midnight Harbor Cafe flickered weakly against the relentless downpour of a cold autumn night. Inside, nineteen-year-old Leo carefully wiped down the polished wooden counter, his mind drifting. He was just a busboy, working long hours to help support his family, but he always kept his eyes open. Tonight, his gaze drifted to the rain-slicked window. Slumped against the cold glass pane outside was a man. He wore a battered black leather jacket, his head bowed, shivering violently as the storm beat down on him.
A Heartless Ultimatum
Before Leo could even take a step, a heavy hand clapped onto his shoulder. It was Thomas, the cafe manager, his face twisted into a scowl. "Don't get involved," Thomas warned coldly, adjusting his polo shirt. "We have customers. Just ignore him."
Leo looked back at the shivering figure. "Something's wrong with him," he insisted. Ignoring his manager’s glare, Leo grabbed a cup of warm water and bolted out the door into the freezing rain.
Kneeling on the wet, unforgiving asphalt, Leo gently touched the man's arm. "Sir? Can you hear me?"
The man, Marcus, slowly raised his head, his face bruised and pale. He swallowed hard.
"I'm okay,"he whispered hoarsely.
"Take some water," Leo urged, pressing the warm cup into his trembling hands.
Marcus stared at the young boy, his eyes filling with a mixture of shock and deep gratitude.
"Thank you. Thank you,"he whispered.
"Stay with me," Leo said, trying to shield him from the wind.
Suddenly, the cafe door flew open. Thomas stood at the entrance, his face red with anger. "Get back inside!" he yelled over the sound of the rain.
"He needs help!" Leo protested, looking up at his boss.
"Then you're fired," Thomas snapped, slamming the door shut.
Marcus looked up at Leo, his voice shaking.
"You helped me... when nobody else would."Inside, Thomas sneered through the window, mouthing, "Not my problem."
With trembling fingers, Marcus pulled a sleek, undamaged phone from his inner pocket. He pressed a button and spoke clearly into it.
"Yeah. I'm outside Midnight Harbor Cafe."
