The Steaming Car at My Station Held My Lost Love and a Secret Son
A Surprise Arrival
The afternoon sun beat down lazily on the dusty gravel of the rural roadside station. Luke wiped a grease-stained hand across his forehead, leaning against his workbench. The quiet hum of the highway was usually the only soundtrack to his days, punctuated by the occasional fluttering of the American flag overhead. But the peaceful silence shattered when a deep, rumbling engine echoed in the distance. A classic blue muscle car pulled into the station, thick white steam billowing from beneath its hood.
Luke stood up, wiping his hands on a dark gray rag. As the car rolled to a stop, the driver’s door opened, and a blonde woman in a red plaid shirt stepped out. She looked flustered, her hair tied back in a hasty ponytail. From the passenger side, a young boy in denim overalls scrambled out, his eyes wide with curiosity. Luke approached them with a calm, reassuring smile, trying to ease the obvious tension rolling off the woman.
He gestured toward the escaping steam as he popped the hood latch.
"Looks like a blown radiator hose,"Luke said, his voice steady and professional. The woman clasped her hands together nervously, holding her sunglasses.
"Is it going to take long?"she asked, her voice tinged with a desperate kind of urgency. Luke looked from the steaming engine to her anxious face, then down to the little boy who was now staring at his tool belt.
"We'll get you back on the road soon,"Luke promised gently. Her shoulders visibly relaxed at his words, a soft sigh escaping her lips. But as Luke turned his attention back to the engine block, a strange sensation washed over him. There was something undeniably familiar about the custom manifold and the specific roar of that engine. It was a setup he had only ever seen once before in his life.
