A Pilot Blocks An Abusive Husband At The Gate, Saving A Terrified Wife
A Flight Into Dark Waters
The sterile, fluorescent hum of Terminal 4 did nothing to dull the terror coursing through Rebecca’s veins. Clad in an oversized red hoodie, she pulled the fabric as far over her face as she could, desperately trying to conceal the dark purple bruising that painted her cheekbone. But there was no hiding from Richard. With a sudden, violent shove, his hand slammed into her shoulder, sending her reeling backward. Her phone slipped from her grasp, clattering loudly against the polished terrazzo floor. On the illuminated screen, a first-class digital boarding pass flickered uselessly.
Before she could even reach for it, Richard’s fingers clamped around her upper arm like a vice. His brown suede jacket rustled as he hauled her upright, his breath hot and smelling of cheap airport whiskey against her ear.
"Get up," he hissed, dragging her toward the automated gate kiosk. "You aren't backing out now. Scan it!"
Rebecca sobbed openly, tears stinging the fresh cuts on her face. The few travelers nearby averted their eyes, intimidated by Richard's imposing frame and radiating anger. He shoved her toward the scanner, forcing her trembling hand to hold the retrieved phone against the glass. The machine beeped, a mocking green light signaling approval to board the jet bridge.
He pushed her forward, his hand firmly planted on the small of her back, driving her toward the aircraft door. Rebecca felt her heart sink. If she got on this plane, she knew she would never escape him. But just as Richard prepared to shove her through the threshold, a tall figure in a crisp navy uniform stepped out of the aircraft door, completely blocking the narrow path. Captain Thomas stood tall, his eyes locking onto Rebecca's bruised face, and then drifting to Richard’s tight grip on her arm.
