A Flight Into Dark Shadows

The bright, sterile lights of the airport terminal did nothing to warm the cold terror gripping Hannah's heart. Every step felt like walking toward a scaffold. Behind her, Matthew's hand was a vice grip on her upper arm, his fingers digging deep into her skin. She stumbled, her breath coming in ragged, sobbing gasps. Her face was a canvas of pain—a severe bruise darkened her left cheekbone, and her lip was swollen. She tried to pull away, but Matthew only tightened his hold, his face a mask of cold, aristocratic fury.

"Keep moving," he hissed, his voice low and dangerous. "You are getting on this plane, Hannah. Don't make a scene."

In her panic, Hannah's fingers slipped. Her phone clattered to the polished floor. For a brief second, the screen illuminated, displaying a first-class boarding pass to a private estate halfway across the country—a place where Matthew could hide her away forever. Matthew let out a harsh, commanding growl and shoved her forward, forcing her to leave the phone behind. He grabbed her arm again, dragging her toward the gate kiosk.

"Scan it!" he barked at the gate agent, who looked up with wide, startled eyes.

Hannah's tear-streaked, battered face was a picture of pure distress. She looked around desperately, hoping someone, anyone, would see her silent plea. But the passengers around them kept their heads down, unwilling to get involved in a domestic dispute. Matthew pushed her through the boarding bridge, his hand pressed firmly against her back. He was moments away from isolating her completely. But just as they reached the aircraft door, a tall figure stepped out, blocking the narrow threshold. It was Captain Michael, the pilot, clad in his crisp dark uniform. His eyes locked onto Hannah's bruised face, and his expression hardened into granite.
