The neon sign of the Golden Griddle diner flickered against the damp evening windows. Inside, the smell of fresh coffee and maple syrup filled the air, a familiar comfort to Sarah. She had been working the late shift for two years, always wearing her hair in a neat brunette braid and keeping her black apron spotless. She loved the regulars, but tonight, a new table caught her attention. A young blonde girl named Lily sat in a wheelchair, looking overwhelmed as her father, Mark, stepped away to make a phone call.

Lily was struggling to reach a dropped napkin on the checkered floor. Sarah didn't hesitate. She walked over, knelt beside the wheelchair, and picked it up. With a warm smile, she gently said,

"Let me help you, okay?"

Lily looked down, her cheeks flushing. In a soft, trembling whisper, she replied,

"I, I don't want to bother you."

"You're not bothering me. We'll do it together,"

Just then, Mark returned to the booth. He froze, his phone slipping from his hand. He looked at his daughter in complete shock.

"Lily, you're talking?"

he gasped, tears welling in his eyes.

But the beautiful moment was instantly shattered. Arthur, the diner’s older, stern manager, stormed over. His face was twisted in rage as he slammed his hands onto the booth's dark green vinyl.

"You're fired! Get out of my diner now!"

he shouted at Sarah, his voice booming across the restaurant.
