The grand ballroom of the Sterling estate was a sea of glittering diamonds, silk dresses, and polished marble. Claire sat in her custom wheelchair, her elegant dark green gown draping over her paralyzed legs. Beside her stood Julian, her husband, his hand resting heavily on her shoulder—a gesture that always felt more like ownership than affection. For five years, since the car accident that erased her memory and stole her mobility, Julian had been her entire world.

Suddenly, the heavy doors opened. A young boy, no older than nine, slipped past the security guards. His clothes were tattered, his face smudged with dirt, but his striking green eyes locked onto Claire. He marched forward, ignoring the gasps of the wealthy guests.

"Please, let me hold your hand,"

the boy pleaded, his voice trembling with a desperate hope. Julian immediately stepped forward, his eyes flashing with ice-cold anger. He grabbed the boy's shoulder.

"Step back from her,"

Julian commanded, his voice dripping with authority.

"Do you even know who she is?"

The boy looked directly at Claire, tears spilling over his dirty cheeks.

"I think she forgot,"

he whispered. Before Julian could summon security, Claire felt a strange, magnetic pull. She bypassed her husband's arm and reached out. Her fingers met the boy's small, trembling hand.

The moment their skin touched, a violent jolt of electricity shot through Claire’s mind. A fragmented memory flashed—a sunny nursery, a baby’s laughter, and this exact hand holding hers.

"Why does this feel familiar?"

Claire gasped, her breathing turning shallow.

"Like your..."

The boy squeezed her hand, crying softly.

"You used to hold mine,"

he said. Julian violently snatched the boy away, ordering guards to throw him out. But the spark had been lit, and Claire’s silent cage was about to shatter.
