The Escaped Sister

The air inside the St. Jude Funeral Home was thick with the scent of lilies and the quiet, heavy murmurs of grief. In the center of the beige-walled room sat a pristine white casket, surrounded by elegant floral arrangements. Elena wept softly, comforted by family friends Clara and David. Beside them stood Marcus, looking immaculate in his black suit and bowtie, his face a mask of solemn sorrow. It was a perfect, peaceful service—until the heavy oak doors banged open.

Standing in the doorway was Sarah. She was panting, her face smudged with dirt, clad in a bright orange prison uniform with a white collar and apron. She had escaped a work detail only hours prior, driven by a terrifying instinct she couldn't ignore. The mourners gasped, recoiling in shock at the sight of the fugitive. But Sarah didn't look at them. Her eyes were locked on the white casket.

Before anyone could react, Sarah lunged toward the fire emergency glass on the wall, shattering it and grabbing the heavy iron axe. She rushed the altar, her hands trembling as she gripped the handle. Marcus stepped forward, his eyes wide with sudden panic.

"She's not dead!" Sarah screamed, her voice cracking with desperate agony. "She's not dead!"

With a guttural cry, she swung the axe. The heavy blade sliced through the air and crashed violently into the white lid of the casket. Wood splintered and broke apart, sending white lacquer flying across the carpeted floor. Elena shrieked, covering her face in horror, while Marcus lunged forward, his face contorted in fury.

"Have you lost your mind?" Marcus roared, gesturing wildly as he tried to wrestle the weapon from her grip. "Get away from her!"

But Sarah stood her ground, tears streaming down her face, her chest heaving. She pointed the axe at Marcus, her voice a ragged whisper. "I heard her crying, Emma..." she sobbed, looking down at the shattered opening. In the dim light of the casket's interior, a single pale finger twitched beneath the broken wood.
