The Secret Behind the Canvas

The air inside the grand ballroom of the Sterling estate was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and aged champagne. To the outside world, my marriage to Marcus Sterling was a fairytale. But tonight, at the annual family gala, the glittering gold-trimmed white walls felt more like a gilded cage. I wandered away from the deafening chatter of the high-society guests into the quiet, portrait-lined hallway. That was when I heard it—a faint, trembling sob echoing from behind the massive oil painting of the family's matriarch.

My breath hitched. I pressed my ear against the cold plaster. It wasn't my imagination. A child was crying, her voice muffled and terrified. Acting on pure instinct, I grabbed a heavy, red-handled fire axe from the emergency station at the end of the hall. With a wild swing, I buried the blade into the priceless canvas, tearing it to shreds. The sound of splintering wood shattered the gala's elegant atmosphere, drawing a crowd of horrified onlookers.

"What on earth are you doing, Elena?"

Richard Sterling, my powerful father-in-law, pushed through the crowd, his face pale with a mixture of rage and panic. He ordered me to stop, but I ignored him, using my bare hands to tear away the canvas and the rotten wood beneath. A dark, hollow cavity was revealed. From the shadows, a pair of wide, terrified green eyes stared back at me.

"Please help me," a tiny voice whimpered.

A small, scratched hand reached out. I reached back, desperate to pull her out, but Richard grabbed my arm with a crushing grip. He yelled that I was insane, but I screamed back in his face, demandingly. It was then that the little girl crawled into the light, her face smudged with dirt. She looked at me and whimpered:

"Elena, don't let him take me again."
