The rain beat mercilessly against the reinforced glass windows of the county hospital's trauma bay. Inside, the air was thick with the sterile scent of antiseptic and the tense anticipation of an incoming emergency. Clara, a veteran trauma nurse in dark green scrubs, adjusted her gloves as the red warning lights flashed. She had seen every manner of tragedy walk through those double doors, but nothing could have prepared her for the storm that was about to arrive.

Suddenly, the doors burst open. Two military medics in desert camouflage pushed a gurney at a frantic pace. Wet mud and rainwater dripped from their boots, but what caught Clara’s eye instantly was the massive German Shepherd trotting perfectly in step with the gurney. The dog wore a tactical nylon vest, its intelligent eyes darting around the room, alert and fiercely protective of the unconscious man on the stretcher.

"He's stable, but the dog wouldn't leave him,"

the medic in the lead shouted over the din of the hospital machinery, his voice firm and laced with military authority.

Clara didn't hesitate. She stepped forward, her calm medical instincts taking over despite the imposing animal.

"Bring them both in,"

she replied, her voice steady and reassuring.

As they positioned the gurney under the bright overhead surgical lights, Clara leaned over to check the patient's vitals. The German Shepherd stood completely still, its shoulder pressed against the metal frame of the bed, watching her every move. Clara reached out to cut away the patient's muddy tactical jacket. But as the bright light illuminated the man's pale, scarred face, the trauma shears slipped from her hand, clattering loudly against the linoleum floor. Her breath hitched, and the room seemed to spin. It was Caleb. The man she had loved, the fiancé who had been declared missing and presumed dead in a covert operation three years ago.
