The Fall on the Porch

The quiet afternoon in the suburban neighborhood of Maple Heights was shattered by the sound of splintering wood and shattering ceramic. On the front porch of the pristine colonial home, eighty-year-old Dorothy lost her footing. With a fragile cry, she tumbled down the white wooden steps, her body colliding with the carefully planted flowerpots that lined the stairs. Soil and red geraniums scattered across the concrete path.

Standing at the top of the stairs, frozen in sheer panic, was Ashley. Wearing a simple blue tank top, her hands were still outstretched, paralyzed by the speed at which the accident had occurred. She had been trying to reach for the elderly woman, but she had been too late.

Before Ashley could even take a step down to help Dorothy, the front door flew open. Richard, Ashley’s husband, stormed out of the house in a grey polo shirt. His face was contorted in a mask of pure rage. He didn't even check on his whimpering mother. Instead, his eyes locked onto Ashley.

"How dare you push her!" Richard screamed, his voice booming across the lawn.

Ashley’s eyes widened in horror. "Richard, no! I didn't! She tripped, I tried to catch her—" she pleaded, backing away. But Richard was already descending upon her. He grabbed her by the arm, his grip bruisingly tight. Ashley screamed in terror,

"Get off me!"
but Richard struck her across the face and kicked her down onto the grass, leaving her sobbing in the dirt next to his injured mother.
