Sergeant William Vance had spent the last eleven months deployed overseas, dreaming of the day he would hold his fiancée, Olivia, and hug his sweet grandmother, Helen. Helen had been his rock ever since his parents passed away, and when her health took a turn for the worse, Olivia had eagerly volunteered to move into Helen's home and manage her medical care. William had gone to sleep every night in the desert feeling incredibly grateful for the loving woman he was going to marry.

Having arranged an early discharge, William decided to surprise his family. He didn't call ahead. Clad in his immaculate blue dress uniform, his chest tight with anticipation, he walked through the sterile, sunlit corridors of the hospital. He carried a small bouquet of fresh lilies, Helen's favorite. But as he drew closer to Room 412, the warm anticipation in his chest turned into cold dread. William froze. Peering through the narrow glass pane of the door, his eyes widened in horror. His grandmother, frail and pale in her green hospital gown, was grimacing in pain. Olivia, wearing a casual pink sweatshirt and her hair pulled back in a ponytail, was fake-crying one moment and snarling the next. In a flash of pure malice, Olivia grabbed a heavy hospital pillow, pressing it over Helen's face, before pulling the elderly woman's thin grey hair to force her to sit up.

Rage, hot and blinding, surged through William's veins. Abandoning the flowers, he threw the door open with a deafening bang. "Get your hands off her!" he roared. Before Olivia could even register his presence, William charged. Fueled by adrenaline and military training, he grabbed Olivia by her ponytail, pulling her back, and unleashed a dramatic flying kick that sent her crashing face-down onto the hard linoleum floor.
