The maple hardwood floors of the minimalist living room gleamed under the bright afternoon sun, but for sixty-eight-year-old Eleanor, they were a prison. On her knees, her worn beige knitted cardigan damp with dirty water, she dragged a heavy sponge across the planks. Her joints ached, a dull, throbbing pain that she had learned to ignore over the past six months. Once, this beautiful suburban house had been hers.
