The Price of the Truth

The city lights of Chicago began to flicker like cold diamonds through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Apex Holdings. It was past eight in the evening, and the vast open-plan office was dead silent, save for the hum of the server room. Clara, a brilliant forensic analyst with platinum blonde hair, stood trembling at her glass desk. Her fingers flew across her keyboard, desperately downloading the encrypted ledgers that proved their CEO, Arthur, had embezzled fifty million dollars from the pension fund.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors swung open. Arthur stepped into the dim light, wearing his signature slate-grey suit. His eyes were bloodshot, reflecting a desperate rage. "I knew it was you," he whispered, his voice trembling with malice. Clara tried to lock her computer, but Arthur was too fast. He lunged across the desk, his hand clamping onto her platinum hair with terrifying strength.

"You just ruined your life, Clara," Arthur snarled.

Before she could scream, Arthur slammed Clara's head down onto her own glass desk. The impact was deafening; the thick safety glass shattered into thousands of glittering shards, sending Clara collapsing into the wreckage. Arthur raised his fist to strike again, completely blind to the shadow moving rapidly in the background.

Out of the shadows ran Sarah, a quiet chestnut-haired compliance officer wearing a sharp black corporate vest. She didn't hesitate. Sprinting across the polished concrete floor, Sarah launched herself into the air, delivering a powerful, precise flying kick directly into Arthur's chest. The force of the blow sent the heavy-set executive crashing backward into a row of filing cabinets, gasping for air as the metal buckled beneath him.
