A Mother's Love Met with Cruelty

The sterile, bright corridor of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital smelled faintly of antiseptic and fresh flowers. Hazel, an elderly woman wearing a faded light brown overcoat, walked slowly down the polished hallway. In her arms, she cradled a simple paper grocery bag filled with crisp, red apples. They were William’s favorite. She had hand-picked them from her garden, hoping to share a moment of warmth with her son on the day his first child was born. Her heart swelled with anticipation as she approached the glass-partitioned VIP maternity suite at the end of the hall.

Through the glass, she could see her daughter-in-law, Chloe, cradling the newborn baby. But before Hazel could even reach the door, the handle turned. William stepped out, wearing a sharp, slate grey suit that practically screamed wealth and status. His face, however, did not wear the expression of a proud new father greeting his mother. Instead, his eyes narrowed with pure disgust. He took one look at her simple coat and the paper bag, stepping forward to block her path.

"What are you doing here, Mother?" William whispered harshly, his voice dripping with venom. "I told you not to come. Chloe’s parents are on their way up, and I won't have you embarrassing me in front of them looking like a beggar."

Hazel’s eyes filled with tears. "William, please, I just wanted to see my grandchild and bring you some apples," she pleaded softly. But William had no room for warmth in his heart. Wanting to rid himself of her quickly, he took a malicious step forward and deliberately kicked Hazel’s leg. The sudden blow caught her off guard. Hazel tripped, losing her balance completely. She crashed heavily onto the cold, polished tiles, the paper bag tearing open as bright red apples scattered in every direction. From inside the suite, Chloe watched through the glass, gasping dramatically before clapping her hands in cruel mockery. William stood over his weeping mother, cold and completely indifferent to her pain.
