The Nightmare in the Maternity Ward

The sterile, fluorescent lights of St. Jude’s Maternity Ward hummed with a clinical coldness that mirrored the dread freezing Rebecca’s heart. Clad in a pale yellow hospital gown, she collapsed onto the polished linoleum floor, clutching her swollen belly. The sharp, agonizing contractions of premature labor were nothing compared to the terror of the woman advancing toward her. Melanie, wearing a vibrant violet dress that looked garishly out of place in the sterile hallway, sneered with pure malice.

"You think you can keep his name? You think you get to have his child?"

Melanie hissed, lunging forward with her hands clawed like talons. Rebecca cowered, weeping in sheer pain and helplessness. She looked past her attacker, searching desperately for her husband, Julian. He stood just feet away, leaning calmly against the wall in his impeccably tailored dark navy suit. His expression was a mask of chilling indifference. He didn't move a muscle to protect his pregnant wife. He simply watched, his silence giving Melanie silent permission to do her worst.

Just as Melanie’s fingers reached for Rebecca, a blur of white intervened. Dr. Wallace, the senior obstetrician on duty, charged forward. With a grunt of effort, the older doctor blocked Melanie’s striking hands.

"Get away from her!"

Dr. Wallace roared, using his momentum to forcefully fling Melanie to the floor. Melanie hit the ground with a sharp gasp, her violet dress splaying around her. Nurses gasped in shock, freezing in the hallway as the violent outburst shattered the hospital's quiet peace. Dr. Wallace stood protectively over Rebecca, his chest heaving, his eyes glaring at Melanie and then shifting coldly to Julian, who finally took a slow step forward, adjusting his tie.
