The sky above Oak Creek High School hung low and heavy, a bruised purple canopy weeping a cold, relentless drizzle. In the center of the asphalt parking lot, oil-slicked puddles reflected the gloomy atmosphere. Chloe’s hands stung as they scraped against the rough, wet gravel. Just a second ago, she had been rushing to her car, clutching her study binders close to her chest. Now, those binders lay splayed in the muddy water, their white pages soaking up the grime of the parking lot.

Above her stood Logan, his blonde hair perfectly styled despite the damp air. Clad in his heavy black varsity jacket, he wore a smirk that oozed unearned privilege. A crowd of onlookers had already begun to form, whispering and pulling out their phones, but nobody dared to step forward. To them, Logan was untouchable—the son of the school’s wealthiest benefactor.

"Watch where you're going, loser," Logan sneered, nudging one of Chloe's ruined books with the toe of his expensive sneaker. "Maybe if you weren't so busy looking at the dirt, you'd see who owns this pavement."

Chloe swallowed the lump of humiliation in her throat, her brown ponytail trembling as she scrambled to gather her ruined notes. But before Logan could utter another cruel remark, a heavy shadow fell over them. The crowd parted. Stepping into the frame was a broad-shouldered man wearing a worn green baseball cap and a faded navy blue hoodie. It was Ryan. His bearded face was set in a hard, uncompromising mask of fury.

He stepped directly between Chloe and her tormentor, shielding her from Logan’s looming presence. The contrast was stark—the polished, spoiled high school athlete versus the rugged, battle-tested man who looked like he had lived a dozen lives. Ryan leaned in, bringing his face inches from Logan's. The young bully’s smirk faltered, replaced by a flicker of genuine hesitation.

"You think you're tough, huh?" Ryan said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that commanded the entire parking lot. "Pick on someone who can stand up to you."

Logan glared back, trying to salvage his pride in front of his peers, but his eyes betrayed a sudden, icy fear.
