A Sudden Spill in the Cafeteria

The midday rush in the college cafeteria was always deafening, a chaotic symphony of clattering trays and loud chatter bouncing off the pale yellow pillars. Under the harsh fluorescent lights, twenty-two-year-old Chloe clutched her plastic tray with white knuckles. Her chestnut hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail, and she wore a simple beige knit top. She wasn't looking where she was going; her eyes were locked onto a figure across the room. Distracted by her racing thoughts, she took a sudden step forward, caught her foot on the leg of a heavy table, and stumbled.

In a split second, the tray slipped from her grasp. A massive plate of spaghetti and marinara sauce flew through the air, landing with a sickening splatter directly onto the chest of an older man. It was Ray, the school’s quiet, hardworking janitor. He stood frozen in his olive green uniform, now dripping with red sauce and strands of pasta.

"Oh my god! I am so, so sorry!" Chloe gasped, her mouth hanging open in pure horror.

Before Ray could even wipe the sauce from his face, a shadow fell over them. The heavy thud of combat boots echoed against the tiled floor. It was Marcus, a broad-shouldered biker known around the campus neighborhood for his fierce demeanor. Clad in a black leather vest that showed off his tattooed arms, his full blonde beard bristled with anger as he stepped between Chloe and the elderly janitor.

Marcus loomed over the terrified girl, his frame completely blocking out the light. He leaned down, his voice a low, threatening rumble that made Chloe’s blood run cold.

"Hey. You got a problem with Ray?" Marcus growled.

Chloe trembled violently, taking a step back as the entire cafeteria fell dead silent. She looked up into the biker's furious eyes, her voice barely a whisper.

"No. I... I don't," she stuttered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
