A Refuge in the Storm

The neon sign of the Midnight Diner flickered violently against the black, rain-swept highway. Inside, the air smelled of stale coffee, grease, and tension. Outside, a torrential summer storm lashed against the glass doors, blurring the headlights of the occasional passing semi-truck. At the counter sat Jax, a massive, bald Caucasian biker with a gray-streaked beard that matched his rugged, battle-worn face. His heavy leather vest bore the patch of the Iron Disciples. He was nursing a black coffee, trying to drown out the ghosts of his past, when a soft, trembling hand tapped his shoulder.

"Um, sir?"

Jax slowly turned his formidable frame on the swivel stool. His icy blue eyes softened slightly as he looked down at Lily, a young strawberry-blonde woman wearing a damp pink tank top. She looked no older than twenty, her pale face slick with rain and sweat, her chest heaving with sheer panic.

"What is it, kid?" Jax asked, his voice a low, gravelly rumble.

Lily didn't speak. Instead, her eyes darted toward the rain-slicked glass doors of the diner. She swallowed hard, her voice barely a whisper.

"Look back," she breathed.

Jax glanced toward the entrance. Through the heavy sheet of rain, a dark, tinted SUV had pulled up close to the curb. Two large men in heavy coats were stepping out, scanning the diner’s interior with predatory focus. Jax's instincts, honed by years of survival, kicked in instantly. He stood up, his towering presence immediately commanding the room. He looked down at Lily, his expression hardening.

"Right. Stay close," Jax muttered.

He began leading Lily down the checkered aisle of the diner. Behind him, three other burly bikers—including Cole, his loyal second-in-command—stood up from their booth, their hands instinctively moving toward their belts. Jax kept his body positioned as a human shield between Lily and the door.

"Nobody touches her," Jax declared, his voice echoing with absolute authority.
"We know," Cole responded, his eyes locked on the entrance.

Cole responded, his eyes locked on the entrance.
