The Storm Inside and Out

The neon sign of the retro diner flickered weakly against the pitch-black sky, casting a warm, eerie glow over the checkered floor. Outside, the rain was relentless, lashing against the glass doors like a warning. Inside, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of cheap coffee and fried grease. Lily, wearing a soft pink blouse that looked entirely out of place in this rugged sanctuary, stood shivering near the counter. Her eyes darted frantically toward the window, her heart hammering against her ribs.

At the counter sat Jax, a hulking, bald Caucasian biker whose leather vest bore the insignias of a life lived on the edge. He was nursing a mug of black coffee, his bearded face set in a stern, unreadable expression. Summoning every ounce of courage she possessed, Lily stepped forward and tapped his massive shoulder.

"Um, sir?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Jax slowly turned his head, his sharp eyes sizing her up in an instant. He didn't look angry, just mildly intrigued by the terrified girl standing before him.

"What is it, kid?" Jax asked, his gravelly voice cutting through the hum of the diner's refrigerator.

Lily swallowed hard and pointed a shaking finger toward the glass doors, where the heavy rain obscured a dark, idling sedan. The headlights flickered twice—a chilling signal she knew all too well.

"Look back," Lily pleaded, her eyes wide with desperation.

Jax glanced toward the door, his eyes narrowing as he spotted the vehicle. A low growl escaped his chest. He didn't ask questions; he didn't need to. He could read the raw terror written across her face.

"Right. Stay close," Jax muttered, his tone instantly shifting to one of absolute authority.

He stood up, his towering frame casting a long shadow down the checkered aisle. As he moved, several other burly bikers—including Cole, a stern-faced man with a scar across his cheek—stood up from their booths, silently forming a protective wall behind him. Jax looked ahead protectively, his eyes locked on the entrance.

"Nobody touches her," Jax declared, his voice leaving no room for argument.
"We know," Cole responded, his hand resting near his belt.

Cole responded, his hand resting near his belt.
