My Adopted Triplets Ran into the Maid's Arms Crying the One Word I Dreaded
The Unthinkable Reunion
The polished granite foyer of the Sterling mansion was usually a place of quiet, echoing luxury. For Catherine and Edward, it was the crowning achievement of their successful lives, made complete only six months ago when they finalized the adoption of three beautiful, red-haired triplet boys. But on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, the cold stone floor became the stage for a shocking revelation that would tear their perfect world apart.
Claire, the newly hired maid, was kneeling near her cleaning bucket, carefully wiping down the base of the grand double staircase. She wore the standard navy blue uniform, her hair tied back, looking every bit the quiet, unassuming worker she was hired to be. Then, the heavy oak doors at the top of the stairs creaked open.
Leo, Sam, and Toby came running down. But they didn't run to Catherine, who stood on the landing in her elegant beige silk dress, nor did they look toward Edward, looking sharp and commanding in his dark navy suit. Instead, their eyes locked onto Claire.
“Mommy!”
The collective cry echoed off the high ceiling. The three seven-year-olds sprinted across the foyer, their sneakers squeaking on the granite, and threw themselves directly into Claire's arms. The cleaning sponge slipped from Claire's hand, splashing into the soapy water as she collapsed to her knees, wrapping her arms around the three boys. Tears immediately flooded her eyes as she hugged them with a desperate, fierce intensity.
Toby, wearing his favorite green tracksuit, buried his face in her shoulder, sobbing loudly. “Mommy, don't leave,” he pleaded. “Please don't leave us again.”
Catherine froze, her hand gripping the mahogany banister so tightly her knuckles turned white. Edward stepped forward, his brow furrowed in sheer disbelief. He looked from the crying maid to the clinging children, utterly bewildered.
“What is happening?”
Edward's voice was a mixture of shock and rising anger, demanding an answer to a question that threatened to destroy their family.
