An Unexpected Encounter

The autumn fog hung low over the grey marble headstones of Oakridge Cemetery, wrapping the world in a cold, silent embrace. Irene adjusted her black woolen coat, her leather-gloved hands trembling slightly as she clutched a bouquet of deep red roses. It had been exactly one year since she lost her only son, Andrew, in a tragic car accident. The pain hadn't faded; it had simply settled deep into her bones, a heavy, permanent weight.

As she approached the familiar plot, her heart seized. A figure was already standing there. A young brunette woman in a beige trench coat stood close to the headstone, holding a fair-haired toddler tightly against her chest. The little girl had the exact same golden curls that Andrew had possessed as a boy.

Irene’s grief-sharpened instinct flared into defensive anger. Who was this person intruding on her private sanctuary? She stepped forward, the gravel crunching beneath her boots. "Who are you?" Irene asked, her voice sharp and cold in the damp air.

The young woman turned. Tears glistened on her cheeks, and her eyes were wide with a mixture of fear and profound sadness. She clutched the child closer, as if shielding her from the cold wind. Irene didn't back down. "Why are you at my son's grave?" she demanded, her gaze shifting from the woman's tear-stained face to the child's bright blue eyes.

The stranger swallowed hard, her voice trembling but resolute.

"Andrew told me to come,"
she whispered. She looked down at the toddler, her voice cracking with emotion.
"This is his daughter."

The roses slipped from Irene's gloved fingers, scattering across the damp grass. The world seemed to stop spinning. Her son, her responsible, loving Andrew, had a child? It felt impossible, a cruel joke played by a stranger. Yet, looking at the little girl's face, Irene saw a ghost staring back at her.
