The bell above the heavy wooden door of the Highway 9 Diner chimed, a lonely sound in the late-afternoon silence. Outside, the sky was bruised with storm clouds, but inside, the air smelled of stale coffee and old grease. Arthur, a weathered older man with a grey beard and suspenders, was wiping down the counter when the door burst open. A young blonde girl, no older than ten, scrambled inside. Her face was smudged with dirt, her purple hoodie torn at the sleeve. Her eyes were wide with pure, unadulterated terror.

Without a word, she locked eyes with Arthur, whimpering as she pointed desperately toward the floor. Instinct, honed by years of watching humanity pass through his quiet sanctuary, took over. Arthur nodded toward the far corner booth. The girl, Abigail, dove under the rustic wooden table, curling into a tight ball, holding her breath with her hands clamped tightly over her mouth to muffle her tears.

Seconds later, the door slammed open again. Logan, a tense young man in a green flannel shirt, stepped in, his heavy boots clattering against the linoleum. His chest heaved, his eyes scanning the empty diner like a predator. He marched straight toward Arthur, his presence radiating hostility.

"A girl ran in here, where is she?"

Logan demanded, leaning over the counter. Arthur didn't blink. He calmly placed his rag down and looked the young man in the eye.

"Why would she run from you?"

Arthur replied, his voice a steady, grounding force. Logan sneered, glancing around the empty booths before leaning in closer, lowering his voice.

"This is family business."

Beneath the table, Abigail trembled violently, her tears soaking through her hands. Arthur slowly slid his hand beneath the edge of the booth, his calloused fingers gently resting on her shaking shoulder, offering a silent promise of safety. He looked back up at Logan, his expression hardening.

"Not anymore,"

Arthur said firmly, his eyes locking onto the young man with an intensity that made Logan momentarily hesitate.
