A Terrified Girl Hid Under a Stranger's Diner Booth to Escape Her Stepbrother
The Storm Inside the Diner
The rain beat heavily against the foggy glass of the highway diner, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with a different kind of storm. Sophia, a terrified young brunette, huddled beneath the worn wooden table of a corner booth. She wore an oversized maroon hoodie, her hands clamped tightly over her mouth to muffle her frantic, ragged breathing. Her tear-streaked face was smudged with dust and soot. Right beside her face was a muddy work boot, belonging to the weathered older man sitting quietly above her.
His name was Walter. He didn't flinch when the girl had scrambled under his table just moments ago, whispering a desperate plea for help. Instead, he had simply adjusted his posture, shielding her from view with his heavy winter coat and broad frame. The bell above the diner door jingled violently, cutting through the low hum of the refrigerator.
Dylan, a tense young man in a grey cardigan, stepped inside, his eyes scanning the room like a predator. He marched straight toward Walter’s booth, his fists clenched. Standing over the older man, Dylan demanded,
"A girl ran in here, where is she?"
Walter looked up calmly, his white beard catching the dim neon light. He took a slow sip of his coffee before replying,
"Why would she run from you?"
Dylan leaned in, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as he glanced around the empty diner.
"This is family business,"he hissed, expecting the old man to back down. But Walter’s hand reached down beneath the table, gently patting Sophia’s trembling shoulder to comfort her. He looked Dylan dead in the eye.
"Not anymore,"Walter said firmly.
”"Not anymore," Walter said firmly.
