A Public Humiliation

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, champagne flutes, and hushed whispers. Victoria Sterling stood near the edge of the crowd, feeling entirely out of place in her simple, long-sleeved white silk shirt. She had only attended this high-society gala because her stepfather, Richard, had insisted it was a family emergency. But the moment she arrived, she realized it was a cruel trap.

Her stepsister, Cassandra, stood in the center of the room, wearing a shimmering grey designer gown that caught every light. Cassandra had always hated Victoria, viewing her quiet demeanor as a sign of weakness. Spotting Victoria, Cassandra sneered and glided over, her eyes flashing with malice.

"What is this trash doing at our family celebration?" Cassandra hissed, loud enough to draw the attention of nearby guests. "You don't belong here, Victoria."

Before Victoria could step back, Cassandra reached out with claw-like manicured nails and violently yanked the collar of Victoria’s white silk shirt. The delicate fabric tore open with a sharp, echoing rip, exposing Victoria’s bare back to the entire room.

Gasps rippled through the elite crowd. Etched deep into Victoria’s skin were massive, rugged, X-shaped scars that stretched from her shoulders down to her waist. They were thick, jagged, and impossible to ignore.

"Look at the freak! Just scars!" Cassandra shrieked, pointing and laughing mockingly.

Richard, bald and arrogant in his tailored tuxedo, stepped forward with disgust written all over his face. He didn't see a daughter; he saw an embarrassment to his pristine social standing.

"Security, remove her immediately!" Richard bellowed, waving his hand dismissively. "Get this eyesore out of my sight!"

Victoria began to turn, her eyes burning with unshed tears. But before the security guards could reach her, the crowd parted. A tall, heavily decorated military General in a pristine dress uniform marched forward. The room fell dead silent as the General stopped directly in front of Victoria. He stood at attention, raised his hand to his brow, and delivered a crisp, flawless salute.

"Captain Sterling," General Vance’s authoritative voice boomed through the silent ballroom. "Welcome home, ma'am."
