The grand ballroom of the Grand Plaza Hotel was bathed in the warm, golden glow of opulent sconces. It was the city's annual charity gala, an event where the elite gathered to flaunt their wealth. Standing on the elevated stage, Arthur, a silver-grey-haired man wearing a black velvet tuxedo jacket, gripped the microphone. He looked out over the crowd with a smug, self-satisfied smile. His wife, Evelyn, sat at a table near the front, wearing a stunning midnight blue satin dress. She had spent weeks organizing this event, but Arthur saw her only as an accessory.

A Cruel Public Humiliation

Taking a deep breath, Arthur’s voice boomed through the speakers. "And now, for our final charity item of the night," he chuckled, pointing a finger directly at Evelyn. "Ten dollars for my useless wife. Any bidders?"

A few scattered, uncomfortable snickers rippled through the audience. Evelyn felt the color drain from her face. Tears welled in her eyes, hot and humiliating, as she stared at the man she had loved for a decade. She wanted the floor to swallow her whole.

Suddenly, a voice cut through the awkward silence.

"One million dollars."

The room fell dead silent. Everyone turned to look at a table near the back. Leo, a handsome young man with short brown hair, stood up calmly. He buttoned his well-fitted black suit jacket, his eyes locked onto Arthur.

Arthur’s smug grin instantly vanished, replaced by a stunned, gaping expression. Evelyn gasped, wiping a tear from her cheek as she stared at the stranger.

Leo took a step forward, his voice steady and resolute.

"Not to buy her. To remind everyone she is priceless."

Evelyn’s heart leaped. Tears of relief flooded her eyes as the room erupted into whispers. But who was this man, and why had he just risked his reputation for her?
