The crisp autumn air of Manhattan did little to cool the sudden warmth of panic rising in Rebecca's chest. She was walking briskly down Fifth Avenue, her fingers wrapped tightly around the hand of her nine-year-old son, Liam. Liam looked exceptionally sharp today, wearing a custom charcoal grey suit for his school portrait. Rebecca, elegant in her cream-colored wool coat, was thinking of nothing but their dinner reservations when Liam suddenly stopped, his small hand pulling against her grip.

"Mom," Liam whispered, pointing toward a black lamppost near the curb.

Rebecca turned, expecting to see a street performer or a stray dog. Instead, her eyes landed on a boy sitting on the cold concrete. He wore worn, oversized clothes covered in soot, but it wasn't his attire that made Rebecca's breath catch in her throat. It was his face. Underneath the dirt and smudges was a face identical to Liam's. They shared the same dark-blonde hair, the same high cheekbones, and the same deep-set blue eyes.

"Mom. Look, why does he look like me?" Liam asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe and confusion.

The boy on the sidewalk, whose name was Toby, looked up. His eyes locked onto Liam, then drifted to Rebecca. Slowly, with trembling fingers, Toby reached into his pocket and pulled out a vintage bronze locket. He held it up, the metal catching the bright afternoon sunlight. Liam stepped forward before Rebecca could stop him, gently taking the locket and clicking it open.

Inside were two small, faded photographs of twin baby boys. Rebecca gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as the world seemed to tilt on its axis. "No, that's impossible," she whispered, her voice cracking with terror. Liam looked up at her, his eyes wide. "Mom, what does this mean?" he asked, but Rebecca could only stare back in absolute silence, her mind racing back to a hospital room nine years ago.
