The cold New England rain fell in a relentless drizzle, soaking the mourners gathered in the gloomy cemetery. Arthur stood motionless, his dark gray overcoat heavy with water and grief. Beside him lay a pearlescent white casket holding his beloved twelve-year-old daughter, Lily. His wife, Eleanor, stood close, her face a mask of sorrow under a black umbrella. Just as the priest began the final prayers, the solemn quiet was shattered by splashing footsteps.

A young boy, drenched and shivering in a charcoal suit, came running frantically through the gravestones. It was Toby, Lily's classmate and neighbor.

'Please, sir, don't bury your daughter!'

Toby screamed, throwing himself forward and grabbing Arthur's shoulders. The mourners gasped. Arthur, stunned by the intrusion, gripped the boy's arms to steady him.

'Toby, what are you doing? Please, we are saying goodbye,'

Arthur whispered, his voice cracking.

'She's not dead, she's only in a coma! Your wife gave her something to drink!'

Toby shrieked, his voice echoing in the damp air. A heavy silence fell over the graveyard. Arthur felt the blood drain from his face. He looked at Eleanor, who had gone completely pale, her knuckles white around her umbrella.

'My wife would never hurt her,'

Arthur stammered, trying to convince himself as much as the boy.

'Sir, look me in the eye. She's still alive. I saw Eleanor slip something into Lily's juice box in the garden. Please, you have to believe me!'

Panic, cold and sharp, washed over Arthur as he stared at the boy's absolute certainty, then turned to see his wife slowly taking a step backward.
