A Desperate Cry in the Rain

The sky over the modern American cemetery was a dull, weeping grey, matching the profound sorrow that weighed heavily on Richard’s chest. He stood motionless beside the small white coffin of his twelve-year-old daughter, Lily. Around him, a sea of black umbrellas offered cold shelter from the relentless downpour. Richard’s hands trembled as he stared at the polished wood, his heart completely shattered. Beside him stood his wife, Sarah, her pale blonde hair damp under her umbrella, her face a mask of solemn grief as she gently squeezed his arm.

Suddenly, the quiet weeping of the mourners was shattered by splashing mud and frantic breathing. Through the headstones, a short-blonde-haired boy named Leo came running. The twelve-year-old’s dark grey suit was completely covered in mud, his face streaked with rain and tears. He ignored the shocked gasps of the crowd and sprinted straight toward Richard, grabbing the grieving father’s shoulders with desperate strength.

"Please, sir, don't bury your daughter!"

Leo screamed, his voice cracking with pure terror. Richard looked down in absolute shock, his hands instinctively gripping the young boy’s arms as he demanded,

"What are you saying?!"

Leo’s eyes were wide, frantic, and deadly serious.

"She's not dead, she's only in a coma! Your wife gave her something to drink!"

The cemetery fell into a dead, horrified silence. Richard’s heart stopped. He looked from the muddy boy to Sarah, whose face had suddenly drained of what little color it had left. Richard shook his head, trying to fight the rising panic in his chest.

"My wife would never hurt her,"

Richard stated firmly, though his voice lacked conviction. Leo pointed an urgent, shaking finger at Sarah, his eyes locked onto Richard’s.

"Sir, look me in the eye. She's still alive."

Doubt and cold panic washed over Richard as he looked back at Sarah, who stared back with tense, wide eyes.
