She Was Cast Out as a Scarred Freak, Until the General Saluted Her
The grand ballroom of the Sterling estate in Boston was filled with the city's most influential figures, all sipping champagne under glittering crystal chandeliers. But for Valerie, this homecoming was far from warm. Having returned from a covert deployment, she wore a simple white silk shirt, standing out against the sea of extravagant gowns. Her presence was an eyesore to her stepmother and her stepsister, Victoria, who had spent the last five years trying to erase Valerie from the family’s high-society circle.
Victoria, draped in an expensive, glittering grey gown, cornered Valerie near the center of the room. Determined to ruin her sister's return, Victoria sneered and reached out, violently pulling down the collar of Valerie's white shirt. The fabric parted, exposing deep, distinct X-shaped scars running across Valerie’s back.
"Look at the freak! Just scars!" Victoria shrieked.
Gasps echoed through the ballroom as guests stared in horror and amusement. Arthur Sterling, Valerie’s father—a wealthy patriarch with a prominent white mustache and a cold heart—stepped forward, his face twisted in disgust.
"Security, remove her," Arthur commanded.
Before the guards could grab Valerie, the heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom swung open. A hush fell over the crowd as General Vance, a legendary and highly decorated military commander, stepped inside. Victoria smirked, expecting the General to join in their disgust. Instead, General Vance marched past the wealthy elite, ignored Arthur entirely, and stopped directly in front of Valerie.
With absolute reverence, the General raised his hand to his brow, delivering a crisp, respectful salute.
"Captain Sterling. Welcome home," the General declared.
Arthur and the surrounding crowd stared in stunned, breathless disbelief.
