The Crack in the Door

The house was dead silent when Rachel woke up at 2:14 AM. It was a chilly October night in their quiet Ohio suburb, the kind of night where every creak of the floorboards felt amplified. Reaching across the bed, her hand met only cold, empty sheets. Michael wasn't there. Thinking he had just gone downstairs for a glass of water, Rachel wrapped her cardigan around her shoulders and stepped into the dark hallway.

A thin sliver of warm, amber light cut across the hardwood floor from the guest bedroom. That was where Eleanor, Michael’s mother, had been staying for the past week. Rachel walked softly, her bare feet making no sound. As she drew closer, she heard muffled voices. It wasn't the casual chatter of a mother and son; the tone was heavy, dripping with a thick, suffocating tension.

Peering through the cracked double doors, Rachel’s breath caught in her throat. Michael was sitting on the edge of the mattress, his head buried in his hands. His stubbled face looked exhausted under the soft lamp. Eleanor sat beside him, her hand resting gently on his trembling shoulder. Before Rachel could knock, her husband spoke, his voice cracking with an emotion she had never heard from him before.

"I can't do this anymore, mom. I don't know how long I can keep pretending."

The words pierced Rachel's chest like a physical blade. A tear slipped down her cheek, hot and fast. What was he pretending? Their five years of marriage, their plans to start a family, the smiles they shared over dinner—was it all a lie? She stood frozen, watching as Eleanor squeezed his shoulder tightly.

"Lower your voice. You'll wake her," Eleanor whispered urgently, glancing toward the door.

Michael stood up, his profile tense and defiant. He didn't look away.

"Maybe it's time she wakes up," he replied.

Rachel felt the world tilt beneath her. The husband she adored was harboring a secret so dark it threatened to shatter their entire life.
