The delicious, buttery scent of freshly baked sourdough and sweet cinnamon rolls filled the warm air of the bakery, making nine-year-old Toby’s stomach growl with a fierce, painful intensity. He squeezed his toddler sister, Grace, tighter against his chest. Her small, tear-stained face was buried in his threadbare jacket, her soft whimpers cutting through the quiet chatter of the afternoon customers. Toby’s own face was smudged with soot from the alleyways where they had been huddled for the last two days, ever since their world fell apart.

Summoning every ounce of courage he had left, Toby stepped up to the polished wooden counter. He looked up at the young clerk, Emily, whose auburn hair was pulled back into a neat, perfect bun. "Do you have any bread from yesterday that you sell for less?" Toby asked, his voice trembling but polite.

Emily looked down her nose at the dirty, disheveled children. Her expression hardened instantly. Without a shred of sympathy, she flatly replied,

"We don't sell leftovers here. If you can't pay full price, you need to leave."

At her harsh words, little Grace let out a loud, heartbroken sob, her tiny shoulders shaking. Toby felt a hot tear slip down his own cheek. He prepared to turn back out into the biting winter wind, defeated and empty-handed. But before he could take a step, a commanding voice echoed from behind them.

"Pack everything,"

the voice ordered. Toby spun around to see a distinguished older gentleman in a tailored navy blue trench coat. His silver hair was perfectly coiffed, and his eyes held a mixture of deep sorrow and fierce determination.

Emily’s jaw dropped. She looked startled, her professional facade slipping.

"Sir?"

she stammered.

The gentleman didn't look at her; his gaze was fixed on the two shivering children.

"Everything,"

he repeated firmly.

"Come with me, children."
