The Identical Emeralds

The grandfather clock in the grand hallway of the Belmont estate ticked with a heavy, rhythmic cadence. Evelyn Belmont, an aristocratic matriarch dressed in an elegant cream cardigan, stood frozen. Her eyes were locked onto the throat of her newly hired private nurse, Grace. Resting against Grace's teal scrubs was a stunning, intricately crafted emerald necklace. The deep green stone caught the light of the bronze chandelier above, sending a chill straight down Evelyn's spine.

Evelyn stepped forward, her hands trembling as she gripped the young nurse's shoulders. "Where did you get that?" she demanded, her voice shaking with a mixture of anger and disbelief.

Grace gasped, tears instantly welling in her eyes. She tried to pull back, but Evelyn's grip was surprisingly firm.

"The woman who raised me said... it was the only thing my parents left me,"
Grace sobbed, her voice trembling.
"Please, Mrs. Belmont, you're hurting me."

Evelyn didn't let go immediately. Instead, she turned Grace toward the mirrored console table in the hallway. With a shaking hand, Evelyn reached into the drawer and pulled out a dusty, blue velvet box. She snapped it open. Resting inside on the silk lining was an identical emerald necklace—the exact same unique filigree, the same rare cut of the green gem.

Grace's eyes widened in sheer panic.

"No... I didn't steal it! I swear!"
she cried, staring from the box to her own neck.
"I've had this my entire life!"

Evelyn stared at the young woman, her heart hammering against her ribs. The necklace in the box belonged to her late daughter, Clara, who had tragically passed away in a car accident twenty-two years ago along with her infant daughter. Or so Evelyn had been told.

"Who told you that story?" Evelyn whispered, her aristocratic composure completely shattering.

"The lady who raised me... Margaret Vance,"
Grace replied, wiping her tears.

Evelyn stepped back, her face turning pale as paper. Margaret Vance had been Clara's nanny. Evelyn whispered,

"That can't be... Then you are my..."
