The Haunting Melody

The evening air was crisp, filled with the soft clinking of crystal glasses and the low hum of high-society chatter. Under the warm, amber glow of hanging Edison bulbs, the annual charity gala was in full swing. Julian, a self-made real estate tycoon dressed in a flawless, tailored black suit, stood at the center of attention. But the elegant atmosphere shattered when a security guard dragged a young woman into the courtyard. She was tattered, her clothes covered in dust, her face smudged with dirt. She had slipped past the gates, seeking nothing more than a warm meal.

As she fell to the polished marble floor, the wealthy guests gasped and stepped back, murmuring in disgust. Julian walked over, looking down at her with a mixture of annoyance and curiosity. An elegant guest beside him laughed mockingly, gesturing toward the grand piano on the stage. "Play something for it. That's enough entertainment," she sneered.

Julian stared at the girl, Olivia. Something in her eyes struck a chord deep within him, though he couldn't yet place why. He slowly extended his hand.

"Can you play?"
he asked, his voice softer than usual.

Olivia looked up, her gaze locking onto his. She reached out and took his hand, her grip surprisingly firm as she stood up.

"I never forgot,"
she whispered, her voice trembling but clear.

She walked to the grand piano, her dirty, worn shoes contrasting sharply with the pristine stage. As her fingers touched the ivory keys, a sad, hauntingly beautiful melody filled the air. The crowd fell instantly silent. Julian's breath caught in his throat. He knew this song. It was a private masterpiece, never published. He stepped closer, his heart pounding.

"Who taught you that song?"
he demanded, shocked. Olivia looked up, tears streaming down her face.
"My mom,"
she replied. Julian's eyes widened.
"Wait... you're..."
he stammered. Olivia's voice broke.
"You left us."
