An Unexpected Guest at the Casket

The air inside the funeral chapel was thick with the scent of lilies and unspoken regrets. Beatrice stood perfectly poised, her posture rigid in her black double-breasted suit. She stared down at the light blue casket holding her estranged son, Julian. They hadn't spoken in ten years, a bitter silence born of pride and stubbornness. Now, it was too late to mend the cracks. All she had left was the cold, quiet room and the soft indoor light reflecting off the polished wood.

Suddenly, the soft clicking of footsteps broke her trance. Beatrice turned, expecting the funeral director or perhaps another distant relative. Instead, her eyes fell upon a young boy. He couldn't have been more than eight years old. His face was smudged with dirt, and he wore a torn gray hoodie that was far too large for him. He looked entirely out of place amidst the elegant white floral arrangements.

The boy stopped just a few feet away, his wide eyes scanning her face before settling on the casket. Beatrice watched him, her heart skipping a beat. There was something strangely familiar in the slope of his jaw, but she couldn't place it.

Then, the boy spoke, his voice trembling but clear.

"He said if he died, you would take me."

Beatrice felt the world tilt. She stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. She leaned down slightly, trying to process the impossible words.

"Take care of you?" she asked, her voice a whisper of pure confusion. She looked him over, noting his disheveled appearance. "Who are you?"

The boy didn't flinch. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled envelope, holding it out to her like a shield.
