The Neon-Lit Encounter

The pink neon sign of the roadside diner buzzed violently against the damp, heavy night air. Rain had turned the asphalt into a dark mirror, reflecting the harsh, artificial glow. Underneath the flickering lights, young Luke stood shivering, his thin jacket soaked to the skin. His stomach twisted with a hunger so deep it felt like a physical wound. Desperate, he approached the diner's entrance, hoping for nothing more than a warm corner and a scrap of leftover bread.

But warmth was not what awaited him. Before Luke could even reach the handle, the heavy glass door swung open, and Marshall, the diner’s imposing security guard, stepped out. Marshall’s face was twisted in disgust as he stared down at the trembling young man. Without a shred of empathy, he grabbed Luke by the collar of his damp jacket.

"Get out, kid! We don't want your kind begging around here," Marshall shouted, shoving him away with brute force.

Luke stumbled backward, losing his footing on the slick pavement. He collapsed onto the cold, wet ground, tears finally spilling over his pale cheeks. He looked up at the guard, whispering in a broken voice, "I'm so hungry." But Marshall merely sneered and turned his back.

As Luke struggled to push himself up, something slipped from his torn pocket. A small silver locket clinked softly against the wet concrete, sliding into a puddle. Before Luke could reach for it, a heavy, worn leather boot stepped into the frame, stopping right beside the shining piece of metal.

It was Jesse, a rugged biker who had just parked his motorcycle nearby. Jesse's calloused hands reached down, gently picking up the wet locket. He wiped the rainwater from the engraved silver surface, his tough exterior suddenly cracking as his eyes widened in sheer disbelief. He looked up, his bearded face filled with an intense, raw emotion.

"That locket?" Jesse asked, his voice thick with a sudden, overwhelming tension.

Luke, still wiping away his tears, looked up at the intimidating stranger and replied softly,

"Mama kept it."
