A Soldier Returns Home Early Only to Find His Wife in Another Man's Arms
The gravel crunched beneath Robert’s boots as he walked up the driveway of his suburban home. After a grueling fourteen-month deployment, the young American soldier was finally back on native soil. The heavy canvas of his duffel bag dug into his shoulder, but he barely felt the pain. His heart was hammering against his ribs in pure, unadulterated anticipation. He hadn't called ahead; he wanted to see the look of absolute joy on his wife Megan’s face when he walked through the door.
Reaching the front porch, Robert took a deep, steadying breath. The warm glow of the living room lamp spilled through the window, casting a welcoming light onto the porch. He quietly inserted his key into the lock, turning it slowly to avoid making a sound. The door clicked open, and Robert stepped into the entryway, a wide smile already forming on his face.
But the smile instantly froze.
In the center of the warm, well-lit living room, Megan was sitting on the off-white cable-knit sofa. She wasn't alone. Sitting intimately close to her, his arm draped casually over the backrest behind her, was Justin—a man Robert recognized instantly as his own childhood best friend. They were speaking in hushed, intense whispers, their faces only inches apart.
The soft creak of the floorboard gave Robert away. Megan’s head snapped toward the door. Her eyes widened in absolute horror, the color draining from her face as she took in the sight of her husband standing there in his camouflage uniform. She scrambled backward, quickly standing up and smoothing down her off-white cable-knit sweater.
"Robert! Oh my god... I can explain," Megan gasped, her voice trembling violently.
Robert stood paralyzed by the doorway. The duffel bag slipped from his numb fingers, hitting the floor with a heavy thud. He looked from Megan to Justin, who had also stood up, his face pale with guilt. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Tears welled in Robert's eyes, blurring the sight of the two people he trusted most in the world standing together in the wreckage of his life.
