The Mysterious Gold Envelope

The grand lobby of the Metropolitan Trust Bank was bathed in the warm, natural light filtering through the massive arched windows. It was a place of quiet wealth and hushed whispers. Arthur, a forty-five-year-old bank teller known for his rigid adherence to protocol, adjusted his glasses and smoothed his black suit. He looked down with immediate suspicion at the young boy standing before his polished marble counter.

The boy, Leo, was no older than eleven, his face dusted with freckles, wearing a simple red t-shirt that looked out of place in the opulent lobby. Standing right beside him was Officer Davis, a stern local deputy whose presence made Arthur’s chest tighten. Arthur didn't like scenes, and he certainly didn't like children disrupting his morning.

"Leave. Now," Arthur commanded, his voice a low, tense whisper.

But Leo didn't flinch. He stood his ground, his eyes wide but determined.

"I want to check my account," the boy replied, his voice ringing clearly through the quiet lobby.

Arthur sighed, rubbing his temples. "Young man, you cannot simply open an account without a parent." It was then that Leo reached into his pocket and placed a beautiful, heavy gold envelope on the marble counter. The gold foil shimmered under the bank's chandeliers.

Arthur’s eyes narrowed. He reached out, his fingers brushing the cold, metallic paper.

"Where did you get this?" Arthur demanded, his tone shifting from annoyed to deeply suspicious.
"It is mine," Leo insisted, looking up at Officer Davis for support. "My grandmother left it for me. She told me to bring it here on my eleventh birthday."

Arthur shook his head, but curiosity got the better of him. He slid the envelope closer, booted up his system, and began typing quickly on his keyboard. As the loading screen flashed, Arthur’s intense expression hardened. But when the account details finally materialized on the screen, the color drained completely from his face.

"What is my balance?" Leo asked softly.
