The Mysterious Gold Envelope

The afternoon sun streamed through the towering, arched windows of the First National Bank, casting long, golden shadows across the polished marble floor. Behind the counter, thirty-seven-year-old Arthur adjusted his grey suit jacket, feeling the weight of a long and exhausting shift. He was ready to close his station when a shadow fell across his counter. Looking up, Arthur’s eyes narrowed. Standing before him was young Leo, a nine-year-old blonde boy wearing a bright red polo, flanked by Officer Davis, a local policeman clad in a heavy tactical vest.

Arthur sighed, rubbing his temples. The bank was no place for unsupervised children, and the presence of an officer made him deeply uneasy. Feeling a sudden wave of irritation, Arthur leaned over the white marble counter and spoke tensely.

"Leave. Now," Arthur commanded, his voice a low, warning whisper. "This is a place of business, not a playground."

But the young boy didn't flinch. He looked up with wide, determined blue eyes and clutched something tightly against his chest.

"I want to check my account," Leo replied, his voice steady and remarkably mature for his age.

Arthur frowned, his gaze dropping to the boy’s hands. Leo was holding a thick, metallic gold envelope, sealed with a strange, intricate wax stamp. Intrigued and slightly impatient, Arthur reached out across the cold marble and took the envelope from the boy’s grasp.

"Where did you get this?" Arthur asked, examining the heavy, expensive paper.
"It is mine. My grandmother left it for me before she passed away," Leo answered quietly.

Arthur's heart did a strange flutter. He broke the wax seal, sliding out a single black card with an embossed gold number. He began typing the digits quickly into his computer keyboard, his fingers flying across the keys. As the system loaded, the screen flashed a series of security warnings. Arthur's intense expression hardened into sheer disbelief. Seeing the teller's sudden stillness, Leo leaned in.

"What is my balance?" the boy asked.
