A Bank Teller Tries to Dismiss a Boy Until He Sees His Gold Envelope
The Golden Envelope
The afternoon sun streamed through the high, brass-framed windows of the historic First National Bank, casting long, dramatic shadows across the polished marble floor. It was a typical, bustling Tuesday, except for the unusual trio standing at counter number four. Charles, a sharp, meticulously dressed bank teller in a navy blue suit, stared down with a cold, unyielding expression at eleven-year-old Toby. Toby, wearing a faded green t-shirt that was slightly too big for him, stood defiantly, his small hand resting near the duty belt of Officer Miller, a stoic police officer who had escorted the boy inside.
Charles leaned over the counter, his voice a low, tense whisper that barely carried over the murmur of the lobby. "Leave. Now," he commanded, his eyes darting to the security guard near the door. He didn't want any trouble, especially not from a kid who looked like he belonged in a park, not a high-end financial institution.
But Toby didn't flinch. He looked up with clear, determined eyes.
"I want to check my account,"the boy insisted, his voice trembling slightly but holding its ground.
Charles sighed, ready to call security himself, when his eyes caught sight of what Toby was clutching in his left hand. It was a metallic gold envelope, reflecting the bright lobby lights. The teller's breath hitched. He reached forward, his fingers trembling slightly as he snatched the envelope from the boy's grasp.
"Where did you get this?"Charles demanded, his voice suddenly losing its authoritative edge, replaced by a sharp, anxious curiosity.
Toby swallowed hard, looking at the envelope that was now in the teller's hands.
"It is mine. My grandmother left it for me,"he replied softly.
Without another word, Charles began typing rapidly on his desktop keyboard. His eyes scanned the monitor, his worried, intense expression deepening with every click of the keys. The screen flickered, loading a restricted archive file. Toby watched him anxiously, leaning in closer.
"What is my balance?"the boy asked, unaware of the storm his simple request was about to unleash.
