An Unexpected Guest

The cathedral was bathed in the warm, golden glow of candlelight, a picture-perfect setting for what was supposed to be the wedding of the season. Esteban stood near the head table, looking handsome in his charcoal gray suit, yet an inexplicable weight pressed heavily on his chest. Beside him stood his beautiful bride-to-be, Vanessa, smiling radiantly at the high-society guests. Everything was proceeding exactly as planned. But just as the vows were about to be exchanged, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the chapel creaked open.

A hush fell over the congregation as a tiny figure stepped onto the plush white carpet. It was Lily, a young girl no older than six, her light brown curls bouncing gently against her shoulders. She wore a simple, cream-colored dress that looked slightly worn, contrasting sharply with the opulent surroundings. In her small, trembling hands, she clutched a black-and-white photograph close to her chest. Tears streamed down her flushed cheeks as she walked slowly down the aisle, ignoring the gasps of the onlookers.

Esteban watched, transfixed, as the little girl stopped right before the altar. She looked up at him with eyes full of desperate hope. Lifting the photograph, her voice trembled but carried clearly through the silent chapel.

"I don't want money for myself, I only want my mom not to go to heaven," she sobbed.

Vanessa frowned, gesturing for the security guards to intervene, but Esteban held up a hand to stop them. He stepped down from the altar, kneeling in front of the child. When his eyes fell upon the faded photograph, his breath caught in his throat. It was Sarah. The woman he had loved with all his heart, the woman who had mysteriously vanished from his life five years ago without a trace.

"What's your mom's name?" Esteban asked, his voice shaking with a sudden, overwhelming dread.

"Sarah," Lily whispered. "She's very sick."

Ignoring Vanessa’s furious protests, Esteban stood up, abandoned his wedding, and sprinted out of the church. Within minutes, he arrived at a sterile, dimly lit hospital room. There, lying pale and fragile in a hospital bed, was Sarah. As Esteban rushed to her bedside and took her cold hand, she weakly opened her eyes.

"Esteban?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.
