The Uninvited Guest

The grand ballroom was filled with the soft glow of warm reception lighting, laughter, and the clinking of champagne glasses. Esteban sat at the head table in his dark navy suit, a handsome groom next to his beautiful new bride, Vanessa. Everything was perfect, a picture-perfect high-society wedding. But the celebration ground to a sudden, jarring halt when the heavy double doors of the hall slowly creaked open.

A tiny, fragile figure stepped onto the elegant wedding aisle. It was Lily, a young girl with short blonde hair, wearing a simple beige linen dress that looked out of place among the lavishly dressed guests. Clutching a small black-and-white photograph tightly to her chest, she walked forward, her small shoes clicking softly against the polished floor. Tears streamed down her cheeks, glistening under the chandeliers.

The room fell into a dead silence. Vanessa frowned, gesturing for security, but Esteban held up a hand, his heart tightening at the sight of the weeping child. Lily stopped just yards from the head table, her voice trembling but clear enough to echo through the silent room.

"I don't want money for myself, I only want my mom not to go to heaven," she sobbed, holding up the photograph.

Esteban felt a sudden, inexplicable chill run down his spine. He stood up, stepping away from his bride, and approached the little girl. Kneeling down to her eye level, he looked at the black-and-white picture. It showed a beautiful, familiar face from his past. Deep concern etched across his face, Esteban asked softly:

"What's your mom's name?"

When the girl whispered the name "Sarah," Esteban’s world shattered. Without a second thought, he ran out of his own wedding reception, leaving a screaming Vanessa behind. Minutes later, he burst into a sterile, dimly lit hospital room. There, lying in a cold metal bed, was Sarah. She was pale, her blonde hair messy, her breathing shallow. As Esteban rushed to her bedside, she weakly opened her eyes.

"Esteban?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.
