The Cruel Collision

The soft, warm glow of the mahogany-accented bistro did little to ease the exhaustion weighing on Clara’s shoulders. Clutching a heavy tray of polished crystal glasses, she navigated the crowded dining room, her brown hair pinned back in a neat, professional bun. She had taken this waitressing job to rebuild her life from scratch, keeping her head down and working double shifts just to survive. But survival in this city was never easy, and some people made it their mission to crush those who were already down. Clara tried her best to ignore the aching in her feet, focusing entirely on delivering the expensive drinks safely.

Suddenly, a tall, imposing figure in a dark brown bomber jacket cut across the aisle. With deliberate, aggressive force, he slammed his shoulder straight into Clara. The impact was violent and unexpected. Clara lost her footing instantly, her hands slipping from the tray. Time seemed to slow down as she crashed heavily onto the hard hardwood floor, followed by the deafening, chaotic shriek of shattering glass. The sharp shards flew in every direction, catching the warm light of the bistro like tiny, dangerous diamonds.

"Watch where you're going," the man muttered coldly, not even pausing to look back.

Sharp, jagged shards of glass sliced into Clara’s hands and knees as she tried to push herself up. The pain was immediate and searing, but the humiliation was worse. Tears of pain and sheer helplessness welled in her eyes as she looked around at the murmuring crowd. No one moved to help. Feeling utterly abandoned, Clara dragged herself forward, her voice trembling with desperation.

"Help! Somebody help me, please!" she cried out.

Just then, the heavy glass doors of the bistro swung open with a sharp gust of wind. Stepping into the light was Liam, a sharp-dressed man wearing a tailored charcoal overcoat and a black waistcoat. He froze, his piercing gaze locking onto Clara’s bleeding hands, and then shifting to the retreating back of the man in the bomber jacket. A protective, serious intensity washed over Liam's face as he knelt beside her.
