The Cruel Game in the Bakery Aisle

The bright, sterile lights of the grocery store's bakery aisle did nothing to warm the chilly atmosphere. Margaret stood tall, her elegant light brown coat draped perfectly over her shoulders, looking down with utter contempt at the young woman before her. Grace, dressed in ragged, oversized clothes that swallowed her frail frame, trembled as she clutched a cheap loaf of bread. She hadn't eaten a proper meal in days, and her pale face showed the heavy toll of grief and poverty. She was a ghost of the vibrant girl she had once been, before tragedy struck.

"You don't belong in a place like this, Grace,"

Margaret sneered, her voice dripping with venom. Without warning, Margaret grabbed Grace's wrist, forcing her hand open. With a cruel smirk, she threw a handful of loose coins onto the cold linoleum floor. The metallic clinking echoed loudly through the quiet aisle. To add to the ultimate humiliation, Margaret used the toe of her expensive designer shoe to kick one of the quarters far under the bottom shelf, forcing the girl to stretch even further.

Grace gasped, tears immediately welling in her eyes. Desperation and hunger overcame any remaining pride. She collapsed to her knees, sobbing loudly as she scrambled to gather the scattered coins.

"Ahhh, ahhh!"
she wept, her fingers scraping against the dirty floor. She needed every single cent to survive, but the emotional pain of being treated like an animal was far worse. Watching this scene unfold from behind the bakery counter was Robert, an older baker wearing a traditional white apron. His hands were dusted with flour, but his face was set in a mask of stern, burning disapproval. He had been quietly observing Margaret's arrogant behavior, and his chest tightened with a righteous anger. He knew exactly what—and who—he was looking at, and he was not going to let this cruelty stand.
