The heavy wooden front door of the Taylor home creaked open, letting in a draft of cool autumn air. Sarah stood in the entryway, her heavy military rucksack resting against her boots. She had spent the last twelve months deployed overseas, dreaming of this exact moment. She imagined her mother's warm embrace, the smell of fresh apple pie, and the quiet comfort of the suburbs. But as she stepped inside, the silence of the house was shattered by a harsh, angry roar coming from the narrow hallway near the wooden console table.

"Old burden, go to hell! Die and leave all the money for me!"

"She's your mother, you can't do that!"

"Ah!"

Marcus groaned, his breath knocked out of him as he slumped to the floor, clutching his chest. Sarah ignored him entirely. She dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms tightly around her trembling mother, pulling her close.

"I will protect you, mom,"

she whispered, her voice a soothing contrast to the violence that had just unfolded.
