The Homecoming Surprise

The afternoon sun streamed through the towering windows of the pristine suburban mansion, casting long, elegant shadows across the foyer. Patrick stepped through the heavy oak front door, a wide smile gracing his face. He had cut his business trip short by two days, eager to surprise his pregnant wife, Vanessa. In one hand, he held a bouquet of fresh red tulips—her absolute favorite—and in the other, a white bakery box containing a custom-made lemon meringue cake. He could already picture her eyes lighting up.

But the moment the door clicked shut, the warmth of the afternoon vanished, replaced by an icy chill. A soft, ragged sob echoed from the grand living area. Patrick’s smile faltered. He set his keys on the marble console and hurried forward, only to freeze in utter disbelief at the scene before him.

Vanessa, six months pregnant and visibly exhausted, was on her hands and knees. Her wavy blonde hair fell in messy tangles around her tear-streaked face. Dressed in a simple light blue shirt, she was desperately scrubbing soapy foam onto the glossy hardwood floor. Just a few feet away lay the ruins of a chocolate cake, smashed against the floorboards and smeared across the expensive wood.

And sitting on the plush velvet sofa, entirely unfazed, was Patrick's mother, Catherine. Draped in her signature elegant gold necklace, she calmly sipped her chamomile tea, her eyes cold and detached.

"If she wants to stay in this house, she should learn her place," Catherine said coldly, not even looking up from her teacup.

Patrick felt the blood drain from his face. The tulips slipped from his hand, scattering across the threshold. "What is going on here?" he demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of shock and rising fury.

Vanessa looked up, her eyes red and swollen.

"She's been doing this every day, Patrick..." she cried, her voice cracking with pure exhaustion. "Ever since you left for your trip!"
