The sterile, fluorescent lights of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital buzzed with a cold, clinical indifference that seemed to echo through the empty corridors. Nine-year-old Lily huddled on the polished linoleum floor, her small hands clutching her stomach in absolute agony. Her dark brown ponytail shook violently with every sob that escaped her trembling lips. Dressed in her favorite bright red hoodie, she looked incredibly small and fragile against the vastness of the modern, high-tech reception lobby.

"Ma'am, my tummy hurts a lot!" Lily whimpered, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she looked up at the high desk.

Behind the sleek reception desk sat Brenda, a woman wearing stylish, thin-rimmed glasses and a sharp charcoal grey blazer. She didn't even look up from her computer screen at first, completely ignoring the child's distress. When she finally did, her expression was one of sheer annoyance, devoid of any professional empathy. She adjusted her glasses, her eyes cold and dismissive.

"You wait your turn here, just like everyone else," Brenda snapped, her sharp voice cutting through the quiet lobby like a knife.

Before Lily could answer, the heavy double doors of the main entrance burst open. Mark, wearing a tan trench coat over his rumpled clothes, ran frantically up the hallway. He had parked the car in a rush, desperate to catch up to his daughter who had run ahead. Seeing his little girl sobbing on the floor broke something inside him. He rushed to her side, his heart pounding with a mixture of terror and white-hot anger. Mark knelt down, wrapping a protective arm around Lily's trembling shoulders, staring defiantly at the receptionist, demanding immediate help.
