The smell of pine and old spices always welcomed Staff Sergeant Thomas Miller back to his childhood home. But this time, his surprise return from an eight-month deployment in the Middle East was met with a chilling silence. Dropping his heavy duffel bag quietly by the front door, Thomas smiled, imagining the look of joy on his mother Evelyn’s face. He stepped softly down the hallway, but as he neared the kitchen, the sound of muffled sobbing stopped him dead in his tracks.

Peering through the doorway of the pine-cabinet kitchen, Thomas’s blood ran cold. His fragile, seventy-two-year-old mother, Evelyn, was sitting at the wooden dining table, her head bowed as she wept uncontrollably. Standing over her like an angry giant was Emily, Thomas’s wife of three years. Emily’s face was twisted in a mask of pure malice, a freshly prepared plate of rice and chicken in her hand.

"Take that, you old hag!" Emily screamed.

With a brutal flick of her wrist, Emily dumped the entire plate of hot rice directly onto Evelyn’s head. Grains of rice scattered across the elderly woman's silver hair and down her tear-stained cheeks. Evelyn shrank back, trembling in terror, utterly defenseless in her own home.

The rage that exploded inside Thomas was unlike anything he had ever felt on the battlefield. Instantly, his training and protective instincts took over.

"Oh, snap!" Thomas roared, charging into the kitchen in his full military uniform.

Before Emily could even register his presence, Thomas shoved her away from his mother. The force of his protective anger sent Emily flying backward across the narrow kitchen.
